The King George Vth Jubilee Children’s Playing Field
The King George Vth Jubilee Children’s Playing Field is situated in Allithwaite, next to the church and Allithwaite Primary School. A vibrant, happy and safe play environment, it has been managed and supported by a voluntary village committee since 1937. The park is a vital, central resource for the village and is an exceedingly well used park. The local Montessori nursery play in the park regularly. The pupils from Allithwaite Primary School descend upon the park after school alongside children from other schools, villages and visitors to the Lakes.
The land is leased from the Parish Council for a peppercorn rent but it receives no funding from the Parish Council Precept. Consequently the committee rely on donations, small grants and local fundraising activities such as raffles, sponsored events and fun days to meet maintenance, insurance and replacement costs. Local organisations, businesses, visitors, neighbours and charities donate to the up keep of the park.
Villagers take it into turns to mow the grass and tidy up rubbish. This is a village resource: managed by villagers, maintained by villagers, funded by village activities, used by villagers and visitors.
The committee regularly publish articles in the Grange Now and the Parish News and have had great articles in the Westmorland Gazette.
New members are encouraged to join the committee. It is a fantastic group to be a part of as you can see the fruits of your labours, and see the pleasure the children get in using the playground. The committee hold an annual Family Fun Day in the playground which brings the community together and raises funds.
